The nasal septum is a sheet of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into a left and right side. A deviated nasal septum can be an inherited condition or the result of an accident or sports injury. The symptoms of a deviated septum are a reduction of airflow on the affected side. The degree of blockage can be worsened by swelling of the nasal membranes when exposure to allergens occur. Also, the deviated nasal septum can interfere with sinus drainage and cause chronic sinus infections.
Our providers can accurately identify the degree of obstruction with in-office nasal endoscopy and document any sinus infections or nasal polyps present. Initial treatment involves medications such as topical nasal steroid sprays and, if needed, oral antibiotics to treat any infections. If medications are not effective, treatment involves straightening the nasal septum with a minor surgical procedure that can be performed in-office, with IV sedation, or outpatient surgery under general anesthesia.
If an external nasal deformity is present, then cosmetic rhinoplasty may be performed to improve the nasal profile at the same time as the septoplasty. Make an appointment today for relief from nasal obstruction!
